Malcolm Knowles was an educational scholar that researched and wrote books on how adults learn and process information. Knowles came to the conclusion that there are four basic assumptions that are made upon which learning can be enhanced or developed.

Knowles advised, we should acknowledge the importance of adult centered, self-directed learning. This is the type of adult centered learning groups that are designed to meet the needs of adults. The advantages of self-directed learning groups are numerous. These groups are also known as team educational programs. The members of the group are also the target of these programs.

The following are some of the key assumptions that are made by adult centered self-directed learning groups:

:- Ascend from the simple to the complex

– Set up demands and observe the response

– Results are known, blamed on self

– Learning is a social activity

– Group work is essential for the enhancement of skill

– Group discussion must be open to all members

– There will be no one better than the leader

– There will be no better time to learn

– The adult has a responsibility towards learning

– The adult must be willing to contribute to group activities

– There will be no better time to learn than right now

Adult Learners – Understanding the Power of Spice

There are so many products, books and websites aimed at helping adults learn. However, because it is a learning-first philosophy, adults tend to become very frustrated by the learning process.

spice is the solution. It is the secret to how adults can learn. The spice may be small or large- it is about how you prefer to learn.

Are you a person who loves to make things work? Then the triangle is the way to learn algebra, calculus or physics. It is how you make things happen.

If you are someone that finds it easier to learn things when you play with building blocks, then the square is the way to learn reading and language.

Is that person someone you want to be? Then the triangle is the tool you need to get to that person.

André Neumann had discovered that the secret to learning was within us- our unconscious half-moon brain. If we could use our unconscious brains more, then we could remember more, we could fluently read and write.

Write one sentence on each side of a brain triangle, beginning with the left most brain point.

– One-One represents – akatharsis- fighting or going forward, and one-twelfth that represents- interpreting or getting the most out of learning.

Write three sentences on each side of the brain triangle, beginning with the left most individual.

– One-One is – fighting or going forward, and three- eleventh that represents- interpret bas- allowing someone to see the big picture of a complex world.

Draw a world map.

– Divide the globe into tenths, using hook-sticks to show the tenths. (So tenths show 100miles,ramids show 200miles, etc.)

– Then, draw a city with streets plotted on the map giving scale, e.g., 1 mile = 1.609 upheld).

– Now, merge the world map and city map to give us a map that shows the streets and all of the major roads.

– To give some perspective, try to imagine a map without the city names.

– Now, find major highways and major railroads.

– Then, find street addresses and email addresses.
